Over the past few months I've seen an increase in clients who either don't feel the need or simply can't afford a full on course of coaching sessions but what they do need is a one off session to help them with a BIG DECISION.

Maybe you've experienced a time when you had a decision to make but every time you thought about it it all seemed too big, complicated or overwhelming.

I've decided... It's official...

I LOVE NEW YEAR'S DAY!

For me it holds the promise of a fresh new start, great expectation and infinite possibilities.

Now I'm not one for New Years Resolutions, as I know goals are best set from a great state  not from a place of remorse or regret and certainly not when hungover, toxic and dehydrated.

So for those of you who are inclined to set (or reset!) your new year's resolutions today, I thought I'd offer a few alternatives...

I don’t usually listen to the news – too much negativity clouds my vision but even I couldn’t avoid the fallout from the rioting taking place this week around our country. I’ve also heard some pretty varied reasoning as people attempt to answer the question why?

As a personal development coach I know the poor quality ‘why’ question doesn't often lead to great quality answers.   Maybe a better question would be ‘What makes these people take the actions they take?

I have a guilty pleasure - you'll never guess what it is - so I'll tell you - it's...

PHYSICS

I know!  Now, call me odd - why not - 'normal' has never been on my list of things to be... but I think the laws of physics are fascinating. Made even more so by the intricate way they run our daily lives, often without or knowledge or appreciation.

But - what does this have to do with common sense or personal development?

Well...

Earlier this week I read an article in The Times extolling the virtues of being 'nice' at work. The gist of it being that 'nice' people  are recommended and get promoted more readily, have better working relationships with team and staff, have a better reputation and are certainly coming out on top during this current , ongoing economic downturn.

According to the excellent article by Jessica Pryce-Jones, we first understood the power of being nice at work in the 80's when a study was carried out at Lingnan University, Hong Kong.  It showed that 'nice leaders got more out of people than nasty ones'!

Well I'm sorry but...

The other day one of my wonderful clients sent me a link to a TED talk, which by the way, if you haven't seen them have some fab speakers.

This particular talk was called 'Try Something New for 30 days' and it reminded me of something I heard a few years ago.

Apparently 30 days is a significant length of time - after which magical things happen.  What I remembered was a story told by Jack Canfield, a great coach and speaker from the US.

Jack told of an experiment by NASA on their astronauts - now don't ask me why... I have no idea!

Let's face it, elephants are huge, powerful and potentially a dangerous force to handle.  Yet man has managed to train these wondrous beasts to work with us and for us.  Ever wondered how that is possible?

Here's your answer. As a young elephant, all innocent, wild and by comparison to his elders, not that strong, the elephant master puts a chain around the impressionable elephant's ankle and attaches the other end to an immovable post or tree stump.  The chain is long enough to offer the elephant some freedom to move but short enough to constrain it.

As the elephant grows in size and strength the chain and post stays the same and now, even though the elephant could easily pull out the post

Now, I think it's amazing how we are sent messages to remind us of something we know but have forgotten.Recently I've been reminded many times of a car sticker I had years ago.  At the time I fully agreed with its message.  But then, over the years of my personal development, growing awareness and awakening consciousness I began to question its validity.  Nowadays though, I fully understand its meaning. This is what it said...

Now, be prepared for a shock because, as a personal and business performance coach this will initially go against everything you may expect me to say...

So - here goes... are you ready?

To quote good old Terry Wogan - 'is it me?' This country is struggling through our recovery from recession, cuts are slicing through public services, prices are rising across the board, making life continually difficult for many. Let's face it cash is tight - especially for the government. OK - so Gadaffi's regime is/was dictatorial and unpleasant -..

I read this recently which just sums up my feelings. According to landmark research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association last month, drugs like Prozac and Zanax are effective in that they lift depression in most patients. However… That benefit is hardly more than what patients get when they, unknowingly and as part of a study,..

I’ve just heard a snippet on the radio news saying that the number of weight loss operations performed on the NHS has increased tenfold in the last decade. Now – I don’t know about you but for me this raises a number of questions!! If these patients are unable to control their food intake prior to the op, how on earth are they going to manage to..

Over the past 18 months life as we know it for many people has changed radically.  Let’s face it, we are living through one of the worst recessions ever and maybe for you there doesn’t seem to be much light at the end of the tunnel yet. The other day I met with a friend who had recently found out his job was under threat.  He is on ‘the list’ of..

Many people come to coaching thinking they just want to make specific changes to one area of their lives such as get a new job, a new partner, a new body… My question here is why? What are they searching for? If they’re not happy with their work, partner or self, changing the external thing is surely simply papering over the cracks? It seems..

I can’t pretend I’ve come up with this – indeed it took a couple of readings for me to get it.  BUT – when I did – it all makes perfect sense. See what you think… Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to £100.. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this… The..

Many students have part time jobs at my local Tesco supermarket although most are still in that grunting stage of evolution but the other day I had the absolute pleasure of meeting a very old soul behind the check out. Something made me strike up conversation with this dreadlock adorned young man.  A conversation which amazed me. He was in the second..

Last week I had the great pleasure to meet an amazing woman – Karen Darke. At the age of 21,  Karen took a fall whilst pursuing her passion  of climbing and was left paralysed from the chest down. Now I don’t know about you but in my head this is a version of Hell.  How do you get through something like that?  Where do you find the will to..

As a coach I often talk to clients about  the beliefs they hold that may be keeping them stuck where they are and how they can change them. I also talk about taking 100% responsibility for your life and choosing not to play the blame game. Some people find this difficult – some people say it’s impossible. If you spend time blaming or berating..

I believe everything in life is a choice, especially the way we react or respond to events beyond our control. Today on Mother’s Day, my three children are living miles away from me in London, Newcastle & New Zealand!  I could choose to feel sad or lonely or hurt that they aren’t here with me.  But how would that make me feel?  How would my day..

As a coach it’s part of my remit to challenge my clients map of the world, the way they see the world through their own filters. But yesterday something cropped up unintentionally – as it often does. I suggested that it might not be a bad thing to be selfish!  Now that caused a bit of a sharp intake of breath!! I know, especially for women, we are..
