How to train an elephant - and why you need to know

Posted 02 Jun 2011 in Coaching

Let's face it, elephants are huge, powerful and potentially a dangerous force to handle.  Yet man has managed to train these wondrous beasts to work with us and for us.  Ever wondered how that is possible?

Here's your answer. As a young elephant, all innocent, wild and by comparison to his elders, not that strong, the elephant master puts a chain around the impressionable elephant's ankle and attaches the other end to an immovable post or tree stump.  The chain is long enough to offer the elephant some freedom to move but short enough to constrain it.

As the elephant grows in size and strength the chain and post stays the same and now, even though the elephant could easily pull out the post

As the elephant grows in size and strength the chain and post stays the same and now, even though the elephant could easily pull out the post or break the chain, his mind has been conditioned to think he is still restricted to the same area of freedom.

There are many people out there who think this procedure is cruel and debilitating - and I have to agree.  Yet it not only happens to elephants!

Where in your life are you still living within the limits set by others for you when you were young?  How could you possibly be limiting the lives of your young, impressionable dependants?

I'm sure you can recognise the thoughts that flit through your mind or hear the voice of your inner critic telling you you can't possibly go any further, that your dream is impossible to reach.

Do you have to live within these imagined restrictions?  Or is now the time to break free of your self imposed chains and taste the adventure, feel the freedom and see the world from new dizzying heights?

But how?

As always the first step is awareness, once you realise for sure that you are limited only by your programmed beliefs you can begin to replace them with more empowering ones of your own choosing.  So start taking notice of your limiting beliefs.  Notice them in your language, your thoughts and your actions.  Capture them, take back your power and change them for the better.
