Biding his time in Tesco…

Posted 24 May 2010 in General

Many students have part time jobs at my local Tesco supermarket although most are still in that grunting stage of evolution but the other day I had the absolute pleasure of meeting a very old soul behind the check out.

Something made me strike up conversation with this dreadlock adorned young man.  A conversation which amazed me.

He was in the second year of his Contemporary Fine Arts degree, the only course he ever wanted to do, in fact the course he said he knew he was destined to do since he was a boy.  When I asked what was next for him he didn’t miss a beat.  ’Self-employment, there’s no other way.’  He continued ‘I’ve seen my Dad work himself to death (not literally thankfully) working for someone else.  He worked every hour there was and then spent most of his weekend asleep, recovering .  That’s not a life.’

This young man knows his passion and has the open mind, clarity of vision and courage to follow his dream – a blessing at any age let alone 19!
